One level of recovery is seen on the surface: attending meetings, completing programs, and abstaining from substance use. But recovery goes beyond that. True change happens on the inside, where people cannot outwardly see, and, for many, individual therapy is where the real work gets done. It’s the place where you can finally talk about experiences you’ve never fully voiced, where you honestly examine the thought patterns that contribute to your substance use, and where the vision of who you want to become begins to take form.
At All In Solutions, each client works with a licensed therapist who walks alongside them on that path, not as a generic clinician, but as someone who genuinely cares about you and knows your journey.
What Is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy, also referred to as individual counseling or talk therapy, is a form of psychotherapy that consists of a therapeutic relationship between a licensed mental health therapist and a client.[1] Individual therapy is the most individualized form of psychotherapy and involves a private, nonjudgmental environment for the client to discuss their experiences, find the underlying causes of their issues, and develop clear personal goals.
In the context of addiction treatment, individual therapy serves several purposes, including:
- Providing space for the client to discuss and work through the trauma, mental health issues, relationship issues, and behavioral patterns that contributed to their substance use.
- Providing support for working on coping and emotional management skills to support long-term sobriety.
- Building a consistent, trusting relationship with a mental health professional who knows the client’s history and can adapt their therapeutic approach as the client’s needs change.
At All In Solutions, all individual therapy sessions take place in person at one of our facilities and are conducted by a licensed therapist or licensed mental health clinician with training and experience with addiction and co-occurring mental health issues, as well as a variety of evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
The frequency of individual therapy sessions will vary according to the level of care. For example, someone in a residential treatment setting or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) may have individual therapy sessions more frequently than someone in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and will be included in each client’s customized treatment plan.
How Individual Therapy Works
The therapeutic relationship begins with a clinical assessment where the therapist and the client establish a common understanding of the client’s history, challenges, and goals. The first session also allows the client an opportunity to experience the therapeutic environment and begin building trust in the therapist and surroundings, which is critical to make therapy effective.
Many clients enter the first session feeling anxious because recovering from addiction requires honesty, and honesty can only happen in a safe environment. The therapist’s first goal in the beginning stages of the client’s therapeutic work is to establish that safety.
As therapeutic work continues, individual therapy approaches and frequency are adjusted according to the changing needs of the client.
The Benefits of One-on-One Counseling for Substance Abuse
The many benefits of individual therapy have been well documented. Individual therapy provides:
- A private, non-judgmental environment. Some things cannot be said in a group setting, and individual therapy allows the client to speak authentically and honestly, free from the worries of how others will view them.
- The opportunity to explore a deeper understanding of their history, trauma, and emotional experiences than is possible in a group setting.
- An individualized, consistent relationship with a clinical therapist that continues to change as the client recovers.
- The ability to use an extensive variety of therapeutic modalities suited to the individual client’s needs.
- A way to combine what was learned in group therapy, family therapy, and other modes of therapy that will become part of the overall development of the person.
- A dedicated space to develop the self-awareness, coping skills, and emotional regulation required for long-term sobriety.

The Efficacy of Individual Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health
A considerable amount of research supports the effectiveness of individual psychotherapy as an effective method of addiction treatment. A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that individual therapy, particularly when using cognitive behavioral techniques, yields significantly better outcomes compared to minimal treatment or no treatment, and that the benefits persist over time at follow-up.[2]
The American Psychological Association lists individual psychotherapy as an evidence-based therapeutic modality for treating a wide range of mental health issues, including substance use disorders, with the strongest support from cognitive-behavioral and related approaches.[6] SAMHSA also identifies individual counseling as a core component of effective addiction treatment services across the continuum of care.[3]
What to Expect From Individual Therapy
Clients entering individual therapy can expect:
- To be met with genuine care, clinical expertise, and a commitment to their personal growth that does not waver across the course of treatment, in a private, comfortable setting free from the distractions and dynamics of group settings.
- A focus from the first session on building a therapeutic relationship in which honest work is possible. Clients are not expected to have everything figured out when they arrive — the therapist’s role is to provide a supportive environment in which clarity, insight, and meaningful change can develop over time, at a pace that respects the client’s readiness and individual process.
- Improvements over the course of treatment in self-awareness, emotional regulation, and coping skills, alongside the clinical work being done in group therapy and other modalities. Individual therapy is where these threads come together, personalized to the person doing the work.
